Bristol City goalkeeper Max O'Leary called up to Republic of Ireland squad - despite not being eligible to play for them yet

Max O'Leary has capped off a brilliant breakthrough season at Bristol City by being called up to the Republic of Ireland squad.

The 22-year-old made 16 appearances for the Robins this season, impressing in goal when deputising for Niki Maenpaa.

After injury to Mark Travers, O'Leary has now been called up to the Irish squad for their upcoming two Euro 2020 qualifiers - although he is not yet eligible to play in competitive matches.

O'Leary qualifies for the Boys in Green through his Kerry-born grandfather, but Mick McCarthy explained to the FAI that he needs a passport before he can play for the country.

He said: "Max is in the process of getting his passport, so that is taking its time. But this is a good opportunity to have a look at him and for him to meet up with the lads.

"He's had a very good season with Bristol City and was very keen to do what he needed to become eligible for us, so we will take a close look at him in training and leave the process of getting its passport up to our international department.

"Max will give us another option at goalkeeper and he gets the chance to train alongside Darren [Randolph] and Sean [McDermott], and work with our goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly, for a few days in a great complex in Portugal."

O'Leary joins Robins teammate Callum O'Dowda in the squad and took part in his first training session on Saturday.
