Bristol City goalkeeper heads out on loan to League Two after coaching connection

Jojo Wollacott has joined League Two Forest Green Rovers on a season-long loan with the option of a recall in January.

It is a step up to the EFL for the young Bristol City goalkeeper, who spent part of last season on loan at National League South side Truro City.

The 22-year-old also made the bench for the Robins last season, playing back-up to fellow youngtser Max O'Leary following injuries to Niki Maenpaa and Frank Fielding.

With Maenpaa signing a new contract, and keepers Daniel Bentley and Rene Gilmartin also joining the Robins this summer, game time for Wollacott and O'Leary was always likely to be limited this season.

O'Leary has already joined Shrewsbury Town and now Wollacott has followed him out on loan.

The Robins did hold a coaching connection with Forest Green this summer, albeit rather briefly.

Goalkeeper coach David Coles moved to the New Lawn after departing City in order to replace Pat Mountain, who replaced him at Ashton Gate.

Yet Coles' stay at Forest Green was over inside a month after he took on a role with England under-18s.

Another young Robin, James Morton, is also on loan at Forest Green.

It will be interesting to see how much football Wollacott gets at the New Lawn as he will be competing for the number one shirt with experienced keeper Adam Smith, who joined Forest Green from Bristol Rovers this summer.

Wollacott signed a new two-year contract at Ashton Gate this summer.

Speaking about the move, he told FGR.co.uk that he was excited to get going.

He said:  “I only found out on Monday but I am delighted and happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started.

“Play-offs is the minimum expectation this season and I’m just hoping that I can contribute, put in good performances and benefit the team in that goal.

“There is only one position as a goalkeeper, so only one of us can play, but it is healthy to have three good keepers and they are a good bunch of lads who I had good session with yesterday.

“I spoke to the manager and it was no brainer. They are a really ambitious club, an interesting style of play and it’s a move that is going to benefit me as well.

“The modern goalkeeper now, using your feet is part of the game and in terms of development for myself, it is perfect.”
