Bristol City given big boost as Aston Villa suffer crucial selection setback

Aston Villa will have to live without their influential January signing Tyrone Mings why they face Bristol City on Saturday in one of the biggest games of the season.

Villa's 2-1 victory away at Rotherham last night moved them above the Robins to 5th place in the Championship table, with City in sixth having played one game less.

However Bath-born Mings, who game through the Bristol Rovers academy, will miss Aston Villa's potential season defining game after being sent off against Rotherham United.

The on-loan Bournemouth defender has been hugely influential since his arrival in January, playing in 12 games as Villa have turned their form around to become legitimate promotion contenders.

Mings was dismissed in just the 34th minute at The New York Stadium after picking up his second yellow during the clash with The Millers.

The defender was given his second caution after handling a cross in the area.

Rotherham converted the penalty to give them a first half lead against Aston Villa.

Villa launched a spirited second half comeback, where two goals from Jonathan Kodjia and Jack Grealish, in three second half minutes, gave them a 2-1 lead.

Villa manager Dean Smith certainly goes into the tie with something of a selection headache in defence with injuries to fellow central defenders, Kortney Hause and Tommy Elphick leaving them short at the back for the big game at Villa Park.

Mile Jedinak replaced Albert Adomah against Rotherham as Smith attempted to cover for the influential defender's absence, but another reshuffle will now be required.
