Bristol City FC's stadium Ashton Gate used for surplus food storage by FareShare South West

Bristol's Ashton Gate Stadium has offered space previously used for events to a surplus food redistribution charity during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The home of Bristol City FC and Bristol Bears has given FareShare South West use of an interior area, which will be used in addition to the charity’s existing warehouse in St Jude’s.

It means more in-date, surplus food can be taken in and redistributed to frontline organisations across the city and wider region as the coronavirus crisis deepens.

Mark Kelly, managing director Ashton Gate Stadium, said: "I’m really pleased that Ashton Gate can be used in this practical way to directly help our community.

“Partnering with a national charity like FareShare is a great chance for us to be able to help ensure much-needed aid gets to those who need it most."

Since Ashton Gate was closed on March 20, due to the coronavirus outbreak, Mr Kelly says the stadium has been working with a number of charities, organisations and individuals in a bid to help.

He added: “The Lansdown family has spoken much about us being a business in the heart of the community; the community supports us and in turn we can support the community - we are just glad to help in whatever way possible.”

Julian Mines, chief executive of FareShare South West says the use of the space means the charity will be able to "radically increase" its capacity and support more frontline organisations in the region.

"The space is perfect for the storage of ambient food," he said.

"As this crisis worsens, we are seeing increased demand from charities and settings who are finding ways to provide vital food support to those who are vulnerable to hunger.

"Whilst this increased space will enable us to do much more, we are still only one part of the wider solution to the current food emergency.”
