Bristol City fans name who they want to replace Mark Ashton with CEO heading for Ipswich Town

With Mark Ashton's time on the board at Bristol City nearing an end, supporters have named the contenders they want to succeed him.

Ashton will step down from his CEO role on May 31, the club confirmed on Tuesday, with increasing speculation linking him with League One Ipswich Town, who were acquired by an American consortium last week.

He had become an increasingly unpopular figure among the fanbase amid frustration over results on the pitch and the long-winded process it took to hire Dean Holden as head coach from within last summer.

With Ashton's departure date set, supporters have welcomed the news and are optimistic for a new era in BS3, and the fans' favourite to replace him is clear: former Premier League executive chairman and big City supporter Richard Scudamore.

Upon the announcement of Ashton's exit this morning, many took to Robins fans took to social media to urge the club to bring Scudamore on board.

Scudamore has often been spotted in the directors' box at Ashton Gate this season, and many fans have declared him the ideal candidate to take on the day-to-day running of the club.

The 61-year-old spent 19 years working as the head of the Premier League before retiring in 2018, and top-tier clubs were so happy with his work overseeing and growing the competition globally that he received a £5million departure bonus.

Scudamore obviously has the passion for the club, but the big question that must be asked is whether he would be willing to return to a hands-on, day-to-day role amid the chaos of the Championship and the COVID-19 pandemic?

But his credentials speak for themselves and it is no surprise supporters are keen to see him considered by owner Steve Lansdown.
