Bristol City fans go barking mad for new home shirt after quirky kit launch

Bristol City have released their new home shirt, though it may have been a more fitting strip for Leads United than the Robins.

City's new Hummel red shirt has been launched with a novel marketing campaign featuring dogs wearing the top.

Various breeds have been modelling the new attire, with one even going for walkies on the Ashton Gate roof that has more often been used for photographing new transfer signings of late.

Reaction from supporters has been good, and the club - who picked up plaudits for their use of novel goal GIFs on social media a few seasons ago - may have come up with another bone-afide winner here.

The club say that: 'The first football kit ever launched with dogs – to put a smile on faces after the ruffest of 18 months – will be available to buy from the Bristol Sport Store from 9am tomorrow (Friday, July 9th). The Store is open Monday-Saturday, 9am-5pm.'

Dog owners have naturally been delighted at the news and the new home kit follows the goalkeeper jerseys released the week before and an all-black away kit that was launched earlier in June.

The new Hummel kits have been warmly received by fans on the whole, and they follow the club paying tribute to the Ashton Gate Eight previously on last year's home shirt and a special edition supporter's kit that featured the names of all those who contributed to the shirt too.

A jersey made of nine different designs was unveiled in the February of last year, paying tribute to the club’s 1894 birthdate, and was worn by the players for the anniversary match against Fulham at Ashton Gate on March 7, 2020, the last game at which a full crowd was permitted at Ashton Gate.

The club hopes for a full house and plenty of shirt sales as they begin selling tickets for the first game of the season against Blackpool at home on August 7.

We've rounded up the best social media reaction to the new kit that made us paws for thought:

Man of the match comment: DaveF: Am I right that you wanted wild dogs, but Nigel Pearson had fought them all off first?

Arny D: Want one now

Jackson: Considering how shockingly awful the away kit is, this is not bad, not sure about it on those dogs though

Matt: Hey, I can’t seem to find the dog kits on the website, can you send a link to them…

BristolDan: Thing of beauty

Owen: Is that because we played like dog**** for the last season?

Steve: Lovely shirt! Which one of the furry friends is being signed to partner Wells up top?

Tom: Oh that is naughty

Ben: Well hummel didn't make a dogs dinner out of the shirt, it's very nice

Ezra: In 2021 more dogs have been to Ashton gate than fans

Kieran: That’s it, the media team have officially gone barking mad
