Bristol City eye move for Liverpool defender Nat Phillips after Nathan Baker injury

Bristol City have been linked with a move for Liverpool defender Nat Phillips.

The 23-year-old centre-back looks set to leave Anfield this summer, with the Athletic reporting that a number of clubs are keeping tabs on him.

That is said to include the Robins, who are prepared to offer the defender regular football in an attempt to lure him to Ashton Gate.

Liverpool are considering a number of bids for Phillips, both permanent and loan deals, and it is not clear which one the Robins have offered yet.

City are in the market for a new centre-back after Nathan Baker injured a hamstring against Aston Villa.

The 29-year-old was likely to start for the Robins this season but is set to undergo a scan before the campaign starts in order to assess the full extent of his injury.

It looks set to be a significant absence, however, with Dean Holden confirming that Baker will be 'out for a while'.

With Tomas Kalas called up to the Czech Republic squad, City's senior centre-back options are minimal, with just Taylor Moore and Zak Vyner as recognised players in that position.

Whilst Tommy Rowe featured on the left of a three-man defence in a 3-5-2 in a pre-season draw with Swindon Town, he is unlikely to be a long-term option in that position, despite his versatility, which would explain the interest in Phillips.

Phillips spent last season on loan at German side Stuttgart, making 19 appearances in two separate stints to help them to promotion back to the Bundesliga.

He featured in Liverpool's opening two pre-season friendlies but was left out of Saturday's Community Shield defeat to Arsenal.

Phillips is not said to be in Jurgen Klopp's plans for the upcoming season, despite penning a new long-term contract in 2019.

The centre-back has had an interesting career, departing Bolton as a 19-year-old and securing a scholarship at the University of North Carolina.

Yet, two days before he was due to jet off to the USA, he signed with Liverpool instead.
