Bristol City expected XI to face Luton Town as Robins look to end losing streak

Bristol City begin a run of three home games against Luton Town this afternoon, looking to inject some life back into a campaign that has suffered a blow after four defeats in a row.

The Robins will hope to turn their form around and end 2019 on a high, although they suffered a surprise defeat the last time they faced the relegation-threatened Hatters.

So, could we see wholesale changes from Lee Johnson? Here is how we expect City to line up.

Goalkeeper

Daniel Bentley will likely continue in goal. He had arguably his worst performance in a City shirt in the defeat to Charlton Athletic but, on the whole, his form has been good.

Niki Maenpaa suffered a back spasm earlier this month, with Rene Gilmartin deputising on the bench at the Valley. Yet, whilst it is obviously good to have a back-up option on the bench, it is difficult to see Gilmartin, a 32-year-old who has played sporadic League Two football over the last two years, coming in for Bentley as a first-choice option.

Defence

The Robins started with three centre-backs and wing-backs against Charlton, but they failed to fire properly and looked unusually shaky in defence, conceding three goals. Tommy Rowe was taken off at half-time against Charlton for Jay Dasilva, who looked good enough to start against Luton - the club he began his career at.

In the search for a winning formula, do not be surprised if City switch to a back four again, with Tomas Kalas and Ashley Williams keeping their roles in the centre of defence. That means Taylor Moore, who switched to right-back against Charlton in the second half, will likely miss out.

Jack Hunt looks set to continue at right-back.

Midfield

City played with three in the middle against Charlton but it failed to fire properly. Niclas Eliasson's impact off the bench was such that he should start against Luton, coming in for Taylor Moore as the Robins revert to four in midfield.

Korey Smith will likely return to the line-up in place of Han Noah Massengo. Smith will give the Robins more of a thrust in midfield and allow Massengo a break during the 18-year-old's first taste of a hectic English festive period.

Adam Nagy and Josh Brownhill should keep their places in the side, although Brownhill will move across to the right wing.

Attack

With Rodri having failed to fire properly in a City shirt, there's not many ways that Lee Johnson can look to change things up front. Andreas Weimann has arguably been one of the Robins' best players this season and Famara Diedhiou has been in decent form recently, so they should continue up front.

Expected Bristol City XI (4-4-2): Bentley; Hunt, Kalas, Williams, Dasilva; Brownhill, Smith, Nagy, Eliasson; Weimann, Diedhiou
