Bristol City Easter egg is 'eggspensive and embarrassing' slam fans

It is nearly Easter, Bristol City’s promotion push is still on track, so what else would a City fan love more this festive weekend than three points on Good Friday and a Bristol City-themed Easter Egg on Sunday?

Well, actually, the club’s entry into the Easter Egg market hasn’t gone down too well with some fans, after one posted a Bristol City easter egg on Twitter, and described it as ‘embarrassing’.

And that brought out a fair amount of opprobrium and a measure of mockery too, as the tweet was shared around the City twitterverse.

City fan Michael McGuinness shared a photo that appeared to have been taken inside the Bristol Sport shop at Ashton Gate, revealing that the club were selling standard Cadbury’s Creme Egg Easter Eggs wrapped in a Bristol City sleeve, in red with the club’s soon-to-be-replaced crest and the words ‘Happy Easter’ written below.

Mr McGuinness claimed the Creme Egg Easter egg was ‘a £1 one’, although they are retailing for around £3 at Sainsbury’s in nearby Winterstoke Road, while at around £1.25 at Asda.

But he and other Twitter users who responded were taken aback that the Bristol City cardboard sleeve meant the club were now charging £7 for the Bristol City easter egg.

“Despite being my club, I’ve gotta bring this up,” said Mr McGuinness.

“Bristol City selling £1 Easter eggs with a ‘Bristol City cardboard cover’ for £7!?! SEVEN F***IN POUND!” he added, before @ing City chief Jon Lansdown and Ashton Gate stadium with the hashtag ‘embarrassing’.

The Easter Eggs are indeed on sale in the club shop for £7, and online too, although there is a buy one, get one half price deal going on.

Bristol Sport are also selling Bristol City branded Toblerone for £12 - more than three times the normal price of around £3.50.

But that price is 99p cheaper than the £12.99 price available online anyone will have to pay to have a personalised Toblerone made for Easter.

Jackie Wadsworth replied that the Creme Egg was £9 a couple of weeks ago, and the mum of two joked that her brother had made her one ‘for a fraction of the price’.

Debate about the egg is still raging on Twitter, with many describing it as #eggspensive, and questioning the ‘damage’ done to Bristol Sport’s brand through this, but many others are pointing out that the answer is to simply not buy one if it is too much money.

“That’s absolutely appalling, but no doubt plenty of people will buy them,” said one commenter, @Clairey_Fairy7.

“A fool and their money are easily parted with,” said @bristolface. “Like most things that are branded, you can argue Cadbury’s do the same with the egg four the amount of choc you get compared to buying a bar.”

Bristol Live asked Bristol Sport for a response, and were told the club would not be commenting.
