Bristol City, Derby, Millwall and Cardiff City miss out on Hull City defender to Luton Town

Former West Ham defender Reece Burke is reportedly close to agreeing a move to Luton Town.

The Hatters are set to beat off competition from a number of their Championship rivals to land centre-back Burke in a free transfer deal following the end of his contract at the KCOM Stadium, with Bristol City one side said to be interested in the player, according to The Daily Mail.

Bristol City, Cardiff, Millwall and Derby were also said to be keen on the former England youth international who came through at West Ham before joining Hull in 2018.

Bristol Live has reported that the Robins are interested in Oxford United's Robert Atkinson, and the West Country outfit are confident in their chances of landing one of their top transfer targets this summer.

Nathan Jones has wasted no time in securing defensive reinforcements this summer and has already managed to lock down the future of central defender Sonny Bradley, who was admired by Ipswich Town and other clubs.

The Bedfordshire side are even believed to have considered Bristol City versatile defender Zak Vyner this summer, having taken midfielder Joe Morrell from the Robins last September.

Although it remains to be seen if the imminent signing of Burke reduces the Hatters' need for further defensive reinforcements.

Jones lost striker James Collins to Cardiff City, and there was no interest from the Robins in the forward despite some reports out there. But Luton look to have come out on top in this transfer race with the Bluebirds. Defender Matty Pearson is leaving Luton to join Huddersfield Town at the end of his contract next month too though.

Burke made 34 appearances for Hull City last season, as the Tigers won League One, finishing two points above Peterborough United. The 24-year-old right-back or centre-back will now join up at Kenilworth Road as the Hatters look to improve on their 12th placed finish in 2020/21.

The former England youth international came through at West Ham before joining Grant McCann's side in 2018.

Bristol City are monitoring several reinforcements themselves this summer with former AFC Wimbledon striker Joe Pigott one option but not a priority target this window.
