Bristol City defender Zak Vyner refuses to rule out Rotherham United return despite fan abuse

Zak Vyner has left the door open to a possible return to Rotherham United.

The 22-year-old Bristol City defender spent last season on loan at the Yorkshire club but was unable to save them from relegation to League One.

Vyner endured some abuse from fans in January, being jeered off during a home defeat to Brentford - but he bounced back and performed well in the face of the abuse, going on to make 34 appearances for the Millers in all competitions.

With parent club City currently short on defenders following Lloyd Kelly's departure and Tomas Kalas and Jay Dasilva's respective returns to Chelsea, Vyner says his current preference is to stay at Ashton Gate, but did not rule out the prospect of a return to Rotherham one day.

“I love the lads here,” he said to the Rotherham Advertiser. “They're a great bunch of people. The clubs would have to speak to each other.

“I have a love for Bristol City as well. I've been there for a long time and want to put my stamp on it there. I'm hoping next season is the time I can prove myself at City.

“I'm not saying 'no' but I can't say 'yes' either. It's out of my hands.”

Vyner's stay in Rotherham was a tumultuous one after the abuse, but the defender says he holds no grudges over what happened.

“What happened wouldn't put me off coming back,” he said. “It was one of those situations where in the game tensions were high not just on the pitch but in the stands as well.

“A lot of people have said to me it was a minority of fans. I've just got to stick with that and believe that, I suppose.

“If I starting thinking about pleasing everybody, it would change the way I play and I'd end up playing worse.”
