Bristol City defender insists negative social media comments about Lee Johnson won't affect Robins

In some respects, Bristol City should benefit from not having fans at the Severnside Derby on Saturday.

With a dire run of results over the last eight Championship games and the season ebbing away, there might be the real prospect of Robins supporters repeating shouts for Lee Johnson to be sacked, as happened in 2017 when Fulham visited and won 2-0, following City equalling a club record run of eight league defeats under the head coach the month before.

Johnson and his Bristol City team recovered from that point and slowly he has helped push the club up the league table. But the current malaise and poor results has reignited many fans' thirst for a change of manager after four and a half years.

The cries are loud on social media and may well have been getting louder too at Ashton Gate, but for the games being played behind closed doors.

Does the negativity on social media have an impact or pervade preparations for the game at the weekend?

"I don't look at it to be honest. I'm not fussed with any of that sort of stuff," said defender Zak Vyner at the pre-Cardiff City press conference, with the club opting not to put forward either Johnson or any member of the coaching team to speak to the media.

"We're a group, we're together, we're backing each other and we go from there.

"I don't look at the negative stuff on social media and I think if you start doing that it's going to be a slippery slope, so you just focus on what you've got and we go from there," explained the 23-year-old, who will likely keep his place at right-back on Saturday.

Neil Harris' side could yet do more to damage when they visit BS3 at the weekend, and Johnson and his side will be desperate to end a run of three straight defeats and grab a first victory in nine games.

Vyner says that the Robins must knuckle down and use the improved performance of Wednesday as a springboard to a positive result.

"The results haven't gone the way we wanted them to. That's clear for everyone to see. We're all gutted about that," said Vyner.

"But we've got to build momentum on a good performance two nights ago and we've got to keep building on that.

"And the results will then follow that. We stick together as a group and we're all getting behind each other and I think everyone is focused in the aim of what we want to do.

"We've just got to look to the next game - I know it's a cliche in football but I don't think we can look any further than that and we just have to focus on what we're doing.

"Build from the Forest game and take that into Saturday and get the result," he explained.
