Bristol City cult hero lands coaching role at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday have announced the appointment former Bristol City goalkeeper Adriano Basso as their new first team goalkeeper coach.

Basso is fondly remembered in the West Country and he was in goal as the Robins made it to the Championship play-off final in 2008.

His catchphrase of 'always believe' is still recited by City supporters as they recall his time between the sticks for the side from Ashton Gate, as he made 165 league appearances across 2005-2010.

The Owls announced that the 'vastly experienced former shot-stopper joins the Owls having held coaching roles with Hartlepool, Nuneaton, Grantham, Bury and Barnsley'.

A backroom reshuffle following relegation to League One sees Nicky Weaver resuming his coaching role with the academy, overseeing the Under-23s goalkeepers, freeing up space for Basso to arrive.

Basso enjoyed a 20-year playing career that began in his native Brazil, before representing a number of clubs in England, including Woking, FC United of Manchester, Wolves, Truro City, Hull, Bristol City and others.

The 46-year-old new Owls coach told the official Sheffield Wednesday website that he his very happy with his new work-place and that he will of course be striving to see them rise back up the English football league pyramid, as the south Yorkshire team bid to escape the third tier.

"I’m very delighted and very happy to have the opportunity to come here," he said. “It’s a great club, with great staff and great people and I’m very happy.

"To come to such a big club is important and so is the challenge and the opportunity to succeed.

"The club has a lot of history and we want to create a new history with a new chapter. I have met the goalkeepers and they are all very nice guys, very humble people and willing to work hard.

"I have spoken to them about what we are going to do and what we’re going to achieve, and they are looking forward to it.

"I believe with hard work and strong belief in ourselves we will achieve what we plan to," he added.
