Bristol City Council won't tell us how much it cost to retrieve Colston statue

There has been much debate about what should be done with a statue of Edward Colston which was dumped in the harbour by protesters.

The statue of the slave trader was pulled down, rolled through Bristol and pushed in the water during a Black Lives Matter demonstration.

Some suggested the statue should remain in the water - where Colston's ships set sail from - but yesterday (June 11) it was removed by Bristol City Council and will be displayed in a museum.

Part of this debate is how much it cost the taxpayer to retrieve the statue from the water.

However, despite Bristol Live asking this question four times since Monday (June 8) - we unfortunately cannot give you the answer.

We put in requests for this figure both before and after the removal - our queries on Monday, Thursday and Friday were ignored - despite a request on Tuesday to which we were told a figure would be provided "when the information is available".

The statue has now been moved to a secure location and Bristol Museum & Art Gallery and the M Shed have been busy preparing it for display.

Since the statue's removal, there has been discussion about the names of a number of other buildings and streets in the city.

Yesterday (June 11) the name of Colston Hall was removed from the venue.
