A record number of Championship and Premier League clubs now have gambling companies as their shirt sponsors - including Bristol City .
A shocking six out of every 10 second tier and top flight clubs have a betting company on their jerseys. In the Championship there are just seven clubs that are sponsored by other things.
Although the Robins ' Dunder shirt sponsor is perhaps more subtle than Fulham's Dafabet or the 32Red of Derby County, Leeds United and Preston North End, the brand is in fact a lesser-known online casino.
Eyebrows were raised and eyes were rolled in equal measure when Huddersfield Town revealed their Paddy Power sponsored sash shirt on July 17.
However, it was later revealed that the kit was a hoax, and that while Paddy Power were the Terriers’ main shirt sponsor, they won’t actually be putting their logo on the famous blue and white striped jersey as part of the bookmaker’s Save Our Shirt campaign.
Despite this gesture, Huddersfield are now one of 27 Championship and Premier League clubs who have a gambling firm as their main shirt sponsor.
That works out as 61 per cent of clubs. That’s the highest ever number of gambling sponsorships in the top two divisions.
A total of 17 of the 24 clubs in the Championship have a gambling firm as one of their main shirt sponsors - 71 per cent of teams.
Meanwhile, half of all Premier League clubs have a betting firm as a main shirt sponsor.
Those sponsorships are worth a combined £68.6m to top flight clubs this season. That’s up from £51.1m in 2018/19 and just £13m in 2013/14.
Just over a fifth (21 per cent) of all Premier League main shirt sponsor revenues now come from gambling firms. That’s the highest percentage on record.
