Bristol City consider move for former Spanish Under-21 international striker

Bristol City's search for a free agent to bolster their forward options has landed in Spain with the club identifying former Sevilla and Barcelona B striker Rodri as a possible addition.

Bristol Live understands that the 29-year-old is in Bristol and could feature in this afternoon's behind-closed-doors friendly against Gary Johnson's Torquay United at Failand.

There is no guarantee the forward, who has two Spain Under-21 caps, will sign for the Robins as at this stage he is merely on trial.

Rodri, who had a brief stint on loan at Sheffield Wednesday during the 2012/13 season, was released by Granada in the summer following their promotion to La Liga.

He scored five goals in 33 appearances in the Segunda Division, from 17 starts, and can play as a central targetman or in a deeper role.

Rodri started his career with Sevilla before moving to Barcelona B, 1860 Munich in the 2. Bundesliga and then back to Spain with Valladolid, Cordoba and Cultural Leonesa.

Johnson had previously considered Gary Hooper and Wilfried Bony as short-term options to replace Benik Afobe after his ACL injury but a combination of financial considerations and fitness concerns have led them to Rodri.

It is thought that Kalifa Cisse's contacts in Spain helped identify the 5ft 10ins forward as an option following internal concerns that the Robins are too light in attack to maintain a promotion challenge, at least until January.

Famara Diedhiou, Andi Weimann and Antoine Semenyo is a solid trio but with 14 matches before January 1 and the opening of the winter window, an extra reinforcement will significantly enhance the head coach's options.
