Bristol City confirm free transfer signings of Tommy Rowe and Rene Gilmartin

Bristol City have announced the signings of utility man Tommy Rowe from Doncaster Rovers and goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin from Colchester United.

The pair will add depth to the Robins' squad depth as Lee Johnson brings in two experienced heads to his squad.

As we reported on Monday morning, the capture of Gilmartin should enable highly-rated prospect Max O'Leary to leave the club on loan later this summer, with Dan Bentley to provide competition to Niki Maenpaa for the no.1 jersey.

Rowe, meanwhile, will offer cover across a number of positions and could even push Jay Dasilva for a starting spot at left-back.

The former Doncaster Rovers skipper can also fill in in the centre of midfield.

Both players join following the expiration of their deals at the U's and Donny respectively and bring Bristol City's number of senior signings to five this summer, with centre-back Robbie Cundy also added to the Development Squad ranks and likely to go on loan to a league side later this summer.

And both Rowe and Gilmartin have signed two-year deals.

Bristol City CEO Mark Ashton has explained to the official club website why the two were brought into Ashton Gate: "I am delighted to welcome these two very good players to Bristol City. They bring a wealth of experience to the squad and both have big roles to play at this football club.

"Tommy will be an invaluable figure both on and off the pitch and his versatility will no doubt be another major boost.

"We are delighted to have acquired the services of Rene, who will also work alongside the younger keepers at the Academy and across the City teams.

"It’s really important to have that extra competition for places and I am sure they will both make a big contribution to the squad."

Head coach Lee Johnson explained earlier this summer why several clubs might have transfer deals completed but opt not to announce them so as not to have to pay the wages of the players earlier than needed.

"I think that sometimes semantics of contractual situations can be key, in terms of the intricacies of an individual contract and bonuses to be paid and loyalties and players running out of contract and if you announce stuff too early you have to pay the extra wages when the contract actually finishes July 1," explained Johnson on Fixtures Release Day.

"A lot of deals will be tucked in the drawer signed and ready, but at the same time we've got to continue our way of doing it: to try and stay as quiet as possible until we've got proper news to tell people."
