Bristol City compete with Swansea City for West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper - report

Bristol City have been named as one of three Championship clubs interested in WBA shot-stopper Jonathan Bond.

According to Sky Sports, Blackburn Rovers and Swansea City are also interested in the 27-year-old whose contract runs out this summer.

Bond has five caps for the England U21s and is due to leave the Hawthorns this summer after temporarily extending his current contract to cover the end of the 2019/20 season with the Baggies haoping to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.

If Slaven Bilic's side are successful and return back to the English top tier, then Bond may be allowed to leave the club with

The Baggies have already lost third-choice keeper Ali Al Habsi who left the club following the expiry of his contract and they may not be keen to lose another goalkeeper this summer however.

Bond arrived in the West Midlands on a free transfer in 2018 but has found first-team chances difficult to come by as West Brom have brought in and fielded Sam Johnstone, a reported £6.5m signing from Manchester United in the summer of 2018.

Bond has however played three times in the FA Cup and twice in the EFL Cup this campaign.

Analysis

From our City reporter Gregor MacGregor...

Bristol City might be looking to replace Niki Maenpaa this summer, who is out of contract and has suffered with injury problems over the last two years.

In fact, he has an ankle problem currently and will miss the final games of the season. He is expected to be released this summer.

And Bond could be his replacement, although the Robins have the talented Max O'Leary on their books, who did well at Shrewsbury Town on loan last season.

Signing Bond may be seen as a block on O'Leary's progress at Ashton Gate, and so this move would make more sense if City plan to loan out O'Leary again next season, ideally to a Championship-level club.

But first the Robins would have to see off competition from Blackburn Rovers and Swansea City, and would Bond be interested in a move to BS3 where Daniel Bentley has had a good season and looks well set to be the no.1 over the next few seasons.
