Bristol City close in on the signing of Benfica right-back Pedro Pereira

Bristol City are close to make their second signing of the week - with head coach Lee Johnson targeting five new signings in toal.

Portuguese right-back Pedro Pereira is the next in line to join the club, after the 21-year-old full-back flew into Bristol Airport on Tuesday to seal a switch to the Robins.

A loan transfer is most likely for the Benfica defender who has spent the last two seasons with Genoa in Serie A.

Portuguese media reports explained on Tuesday that a deal had been agreed with the West Country men - and all that remained was for a medical examination, that Bristol Live understands took place this afternoon.

An official announcement is expected from the club imminently.

City have made several trips to Portugal to assess transfer targets this summer and last, and as previously reported, we understand that Lee Johnson and Mark Ashton have spoken to several top football agencies in Portugal too, including meeting super-agent Jorge Mendes.

The head coach explained at the weekend that he wants five new signings, and mentioned the right-back area as one zone to reinforce.

The club was mooted to have an interest in Charlton Athletic full-back Anfernee Dijksteel, but Middlesbrough have won the race for the Addicks defender, with a £2m offer.

Bristol City have since moved on to Pereira, who is 6ft tall, attacking and who also won the Primeira Liga in the 16/17 season with the Eagles.

"Yep, I'll be open and honest. We need a centre-half, we need another midfielder. Obviously you know we are trying to do the lad, Massengo, who's a young talent.

"I think we need a striker and I think we need a right-back as well to compete in that position," said Johnson on Sunday.
