Bristol City chase two young lower league players but Rotherham United and Huddersfield in lead - reports

Bristol City have been linked with two bright EFL prospects as they look to add reinforcements to their squad ahead of the 2019/20 season.

Forest Green Rovers defender Nathan McGinley is one with the Huddersfield Examiner claiming that the Ashton Gate-based club are tracking the 6ft 3ins centre-back who can also fill in at left-back.

While McGinley might be eyed as a replacement for the outgoing Lloyd Kelly, it remains to be seen if the recruitment of Robbie Cundy may have scuppered any real interest in the former Middlesbrough man who has also spent time on loan at Wycombe Wanderers.

Following the loss of Kelly and without Tomas Kalas or Jay Dasilva after their respective loan deals ended City are in desperate need of more defenders. But Huddersfield, Nottingham Forest and Swansea City are also reportedly in the race.

City head coach Lee Johnson admitted the need for a left-back recently himself in a recent radio interview with BBC Radio Bristol.

"At a starting point we haven’t got a recognised left back, we’ve got young Cam Pring for example who’s a bright young talent, obviously with Lloyd (Kelly) going and Jay Dasilva not ours yet, if you like, that becomes a priority as the first port of call is to fill a team that can be competitive and more in the championship," said Johnson last month.

Meanwhile, the Sun's football league reporter Tom Barclay has said that he believes that Bristol City are also tracking Southend United midfielder Dru Yearwood.

The 19-year-old midfielder made 53 appearances for the Shrimpers last term and fits the profile that the Robins often look for: young, talented and with lower league experience.

City have also had good dealings with Kevin Bond's side and lent centre-back Taylor Moore to the Roots Hall club last campaign.

Bond has previously spoken about Moore returning to the Essex-based side, so it is quite logical that the impressive Yearwood's name may have been mentioned in any conversations.

However, Rotherham United appear to be leading the chase there having already bid for the young talent.

Cundy remains the only Bristol City signing to date this transfer window.
