Bristol City chairman demands stricter ownership rules in passionate Bury tribute

Jon Lansdown has paid an emotional tribute to Bury and called for stricter fit and proper persons tests in football.

After the Shakers were expelled from the EFL, the Bristol City chairman revealed on Twitter that the first game he ever attended was the Robins against Bury.

Bury's expulsion after a proposed takeover fell through has sent shockwaves through English football, especially with Bolton Wanderers in a similarly financially-stricken situation.

Robins chairman Lansdown called for more stringent ownership rules to prevent more clubs from suffering financial problems.

He said: "First game I ever watched: Bristol City v Bury.

"My heart goes out to Bury and the entire community. Football is about the fans and the community in which they exist.

"Owners are also custodians. We need a fit and proper, fit and proper test and other rules to protect our game."

The Robins hierarchy, including owner Steve Lansdown, are well known to support stronger financial rules in the EFL.

City consistently make sure they pass FFP rules, which also enabled them to spend big on players over the summer.

Robins fans on social media admitted that Bury's demise brought back bad memories of City's own financial problems in 1982.

Dave Fear: Takes me back to the horrible day City we’re at the brink. But for the eight we would have gone. Des Williams led the consortium who took us on real fans as is Steve & family thank goodness.

Delboy's Filofax: Never forget the Ashton Gate eight  without whom you would never have had a club to takeover, don't get me wrong you and your father have been fantastic for the club I love and I thank you, but never forget what those guys did in 82.

JH: Just highlights how fortunate we are to have the Lansdown family. A travesty that this can happen at any level, let alone in the Football League. Football clubs are the heart of communities.

Roy Cropper's Bag: Makes you think how close City to folding ourselves, it must be the worst possible day for Bury supporters.

Arn Davidson: It makes all us City fans appreciate how well our club is now being run. Very sad day for Bury.
