Bristol City caretaker boss Holden explains why on-loan Stoke City striker misses Middlesbrough clash

Bristol City will be without Benik Afobe for today's game at Middlesbrough due to illness.

The striker, on loan from Stoke City, started feeling unwell at the team hotel this morning, and has not recovered in time for the game at the Riverside, leaving Dean Holden without his full compliment of nine subs.

Holden told BBC Radio Bristol: "Unfortunately just before pre-match meal this morning he was overcome with a stomach problem, so you can understand the torture he’s going through at the moment, unfortunately for him.

"We’ll go with all we’ve got and we’ll trust all the players."

Afobe, who has suffered an injury-plagued season after tearing a knee ligament in September, has just two games left of his loan spell with the Robins, with the 27-year-old ineligible for Wednesday's visit of his parent club.

His time at City, which has featured some fine performances, appears to be coming to an end.

City have a pre-arranged purchase price of £8million with Stoke, which was agreed before the coronavirus pandemic, but the Robins appear unlikely to enact that clause.

The player earns in the region of £35,000 a week, and City are likely to assess other options this summer.
