Bristol City boss Lee Johnson determined to finish season but admits it may be behind closed doors

Lee Johnson has reiterated his desire to see the Championship season finish.

With the football season currently suspended due to the coronavirus, there have been multiple suggestions over the best course of action to resolve the situation, with clubs not due back in action until May.

Whilst non-league divisions have been declared null and void with a view to starting next season on time, the FA and EFL are debating the best way that professional campaigns can be completed.

Bristol City boss Johnson is keen to see fans return to stadiums for the football, but admits that waiting too long could pose issues, with player contracts set to expire in the summer.

"It has to be played," he said to BBC Bristol.

"For me, the integrity of the division, it's the most competitive division in the world and there's so much at stake, that we have to see this through.

"When that is, I don't know - it's a catch-22.

"For me, it's so important that the fans are there because, as players and staff, everything is about performing, and if you're not performing in front of supporters, then everything we work towards almost pales into insignificance.

"In saying that, there's so many side issues that go along with that.

"Obviously there's players contracts and definitely the health of the nation, because you know that the minute football comes back there'll be sell-out crowds absolutely everywhere because everyone will want to go.

"So whether we play behind closed doors and the games are televised, I don't know, but, certainly, the contract situation is one that could prove very difficult for clubs to have to manage and deal with."
