Bristol City beat Swansea City and Reading to loan signing of Fulham right-back

Bristol City are set to announce Fulham right-back Steven Sessegnon as their latest signing of the summer transfer window.

The Evening Standard's Dan Kilpatrick reports that the Cottagers have agreed to release the 20-year-old to City for the 2019/20 Championship season, less than 24 hours after the Robins confirmed the signing of his teammate Alfie Mawson in a similar deal.

Bristol Live understands this to be accurate with an announcement expected later today.

Sessegnon’s arrival in BS3 will end head coach Dean Holden’s search for a right wing-back in his 3-5-2 to provide competition to Jack Hunt, who started and assisted both goals, in City’s 2-0 Carabao Cup win against Exeter City on Saturday.

Open dialogue had continued with Benfica over potentially bringing Pedro Pereira back for a second season but that’s as far as discussions went with England Under-21 Sessegnon the preference.

Sessegnon made 14 league appearances for Fulham last season but didn’t start in a Championship fixture after February 15, as he fell to third choice below Dennis Odoi and Cyrus Christie.

Fulham are set to add a third right-back in Torino’s Ola Aina and his impending arrival has allowed Scott Parker to agree to send Sessegnon out, on the basis his development would be better served at Bristol City.

Sessegnon, the twin brother of Tottenham’s Ryan, is familiar to City assistant head coaches Keith Downing and Paul Simpson who have worked with the full-back at England Under-19 and Under-20 level.

Swansea City and Reading were also interested in signing the 20-year-old, with Swans manager Steve Cooper having capped Sessegnon at Under-17 level, and made him an important part of the team that won the 2017 World Cup in India.

Sessegnon will join Fulham teammate Mawson, striker Chris Martin and midfielder Joe Williams as City’s fourth signing ahead of the new Championship season which kicks off on Saturday against Coventry City.
