Bristol City and Leeds United mourn death of legendary defender Norman Hunter

Former Bristol City, Leeds United and England defender Norman Hunter has died, aged 76, after contracting coronavirus.

Leeds United announced the news on Friday morning, a week after Hunter had been hospitalised after testing positive for Covid-19.

A traditional, aggressive, deeply competitive English centre-back, Hunter made 122 appearances for City from 1976-79 during their season in the top flight under Alan Dicks.

Nicknamed “Bite yer legs” due to his fearsome brand of tackling, Hunter had previously established himself at Leeds United where he became a club legend after winning two First Division titles and the FA Cup.

In a statement on their official website, Bristol City wrote: "Bristol City Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Norman Hunter.

"Norman was taken to hospital at the end of last week after being diagnosed with COVID-19, and despite the treatment, the 76-year-old sadly lost his fight earlier this morning.

"The thoughts of everyone at Bristol City are with Norman’s family and friends at this very difficult time."

Hunter amassed a huge 726 appearances for Leeds United over a 14 year period and won 28 caps for England, including being part of the World Cup-winning squad of 1966.

After leaving Ashton Gate, Hunter returned to Yorkshire to play for Barnsley before retiring and managing Rotherham.

In a statement on their website, Leeds wrote: "Leeds United are devastated to learn of the passing of club icon Norman Hunter at the age of 76.

"He leaves a huge hole in the Leeds United family, his legacy will never be forgotten and our thoughts are with Norman’s family and friends at this very difficult time."
