Tier change may stop Bristol City and Bristol Rovers fans' return to football stadiums

Fans are to be allowed back into some football stadiums for matches in just eight days' time.

Fixtures have been played behind closed doors since the start of the summer due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, that will all change from next week when the latest national restrictions are lifted on December 2.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the new changes as he addressed plans for the nation once the current lockdown is over via a public announcement on Monday afternoon.

England is currently in a second lockdown in a bid to curb the latest rise of Covid-19 cases. And Bristol is currently designated as a Tier one area - however local council leaders believe that the region could move up to a more serious level and higher tier soon due to current infection rates. It is possible that Bristol could move to Tier 3 when new tiers are announced on Thursday 26 November.

The Government plans to return to a three-tier system at the start of next month, which will affect sporting events too.

Outdoor venues that are in Tier 1 areas (of lowest risk) will be allowed to host 4,000 spectators or fill 50% of their capacity (whichever is lower).

For indoor venues, it will be half the amount (2,000 maximum).

Outdoor venues in Tier 2 areas will be able to welcome 2,000 spectators, or 50% of their capacity (whichever is lower). Indoor venues can hold up to 1,000 people.

Unfortunately, under the new rules, no fans would be allowed to attend any sporting venue in Tier 3 areas - and so if Bristol changes tier this may yet stop fans attending games.

Prime Minister Johnson addressed the nation in a briefing on Monday afternoon, confirming the changes.

Meanwhile, outdoor grassroots sport will be allowed to resume in England when the national lockdown ends too, according to the new legislation.
