Bristol City and Barnsley target rejects 'magnificent' offer from Celtic

Bristol City could be back in the race to sign Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull after the teenager turned down Celtic's "magnificent" offer of a contract.

City have made enquiries over Turnbull's availability, while Championship Barnsley failed with a £2m bid, but Celtic looked to have secured the 19-year-old's signature earlier this week when their £3m offer was accepted .

The fee would be a club record for Motherwell and matched their valuation of a player who scored 15 goals in 30 appearances from midfield in the Scottish Premiership.

However, Celtic released a statement on Friday detailed how they have been unable to agree personal terms with Turnbull and insisted the transfer would be called off if further talks do not progress.

"Currently, we have been unable to come to an agreement with the player's agent," said Celtic.

"Celtic FC is content that it has made a magnificent offer and it is now up to the agent and player to decide if the player wants to join Celtic. If not, we move on."

It's highly unusual for a club to make such negotiations public before a transfer is completed and Celtic appear to be trying to force Turnbull's hand into accepting their deal.

However, the 19-year-old has plenty of suitors outside Scotland, including at Premier League Southampton and Bournemouth, who should be able to exceed Celtic's salary offer, should their interest manifest into an actual offer.

Indeed, the Daily Record report that Turnbull's agent is actively trying to move the player to an English club which has frustrated Celtic and could cause the transfer to collapse.

From , it's unclear if they want to take their own interest in the player further but the Robins now know he will cost £3m and should have a good idea at what level of wage will be sufficient to bring him to Ashton Gate.

Since bidding for Turnbull, Barnsley have signed attacking midfielder Luke Thomas from Derby County for £1.2m which means they may feel they no longer require the Scot.

However, the fact remains that throughout all this process, sources close to Turnbull, who is currently on holiday, are insistent that he favours a move to Celtic above all other options.
