Bristol City agree deal with Steve Cotterill's Shrewsbury Town for full-back

Bristol City have agreed a deal that will see defender George Nurse move to Shrewsbury Town permanently.

Shrews boss Steve Cotterill visited the Robins High Performance Centre last weekend to watch his former side beat MK Dons, as a guest of Brian Tinnion and Scott Murray, and keep an eye on several young players - including Nurse - and City have considered selling the left-back all summer.

Bristol Live reported that there was interest in Nurse this week and other League One clubs have considered making a move for the Robins academy graduate this summer. Cheltenham Town were one interested side.

Nigel Pearson has given first-team chances to Nurse over pre-season, but with Cameron Pring (23) and Jay Dailva (23) already on the books, it was always likely that one of the three was to depart from Ashton Gate.

The 22-year-old moves to the Montgomery Waters Meadow on a two-year-deal and links up with former Robins Aaron Wilbraham, Cotterill and Keith Burt there.

A statement from Bristol City explained that: "The club wishes George Nurse all the best as he joins Shrewsbury Town on a permanent transfer. The defender joins the League One outfit ahead of their 2021/22 campaign, which kicks off in just over a week's time."

Nurse has been with the Robins for 13 years, rising through the ranks at Ashton Gate and developing his game with loans at Weston-super-Mare, Newport County and Walsall.

He was given game time against Celtic, Portsmouth and MK Dons before missing the trip to Devon on Tuesday to complete the formalities of the move to link up with Cotterill.

""He's not just a full-back, that's why we've signed him. We've been looking for someone who can be flexible for us and George gives us that," explained Cotterill on the Shrewsbury Town website of the transfer.

"He can play wing-back, left-sided centre-back in a three, or as a full-back. George is a good signing for us and he can in play many areas."

Shrewsbury Town face Burton Albion on Saturday, August 7 in their first game of the League One season.
