Bristol cinema to host night of films and talks exploring black and brown lives

Bristol’s Cube cinema will host a special evening of films and talks by filmmakers and creatives exploring their experiences of black and brown lives.

Organised by Cables & Cameras, the event hosted by Adam Murray from Bristol Black Horror Club will feature a Q&A with local actors Scott Bayliss and Zibiah Zoe discussing the short film Control with director Correll Johnson.

Full details of the evening’s line-up have yet to be confirmed but many more films will be added to the bill.

Over the past three years, Cables & Cameras has grown from strength to strength, building on the early bi-monthly film nights to staging an outdoor film screening at the St Paul’s 50th carnival anniversary.

It has hosted events at major film festivals and become a key voice and leader in Bristol’s independent film community.

The events create a hub for POC filmmakers and creatives in Bristol to showcase their short films and ‘sizzler reels’, enabling a platform where filmmakers can discuss, share and debate ideas.

Creating this space also opens up opportunities to collaborate and network with other like-minded POC creatives.

POC representation across the film industry is well below where it needs to be and although Bristol has a diverse community and mix of cultures, many stories that affect people day-to-day are left untold.

Cables & Cameras founder Gary Thompson, who grew up in Knowle West, recognised and identified the need to fill a gap in linking the community to film and vice versa.

Alongside creating a movement and enabling access into POC films, Cables & Cameras also runs film projects, with filming and production credits achieved over a number of years by the founder.

The event at The Cube cinema is on October 29, 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 or £4 with concessions.
