Bristol cemetery hosting candlelit gin tasting event

Anyone who has visited Arnos Vale Cemetery will tell you that it's a beautiful place - but like any graveyard, it's also pretty eerie after the sun goes down.

The unique Victorian heritage site is home to 45 acres of greenery with plenty to explore, including wildlife, architecture and fascinating memorials.

And next month, the stunning gardens will host to a gin tasting night which promises to be a must-attend for fans of the drink and those interested in the supernatural.

The candlelit event, which takes place on September 27 between 7pm and 9.30pm, will explore 'the life and death of Madam Geneva', a former name for juniper, which is what gives gin its distinct flavour.

What's included

• A welcome 'Smoked Bramble' drink, which includes Bristol Dry Gin, blackberry liquor, lemon juice and Arnos Vale foraged Blackberries.

• The History Of Gin: Experts explore our relationship with juniper from medieval England right up to small batch distillation of the 2000s.

• A guided tasting of three gins: Plymouth Gin, Silent Pool and Deaths Door Single Estate. Each gin has either a unique or macabre tale of their own. There will be a Gin Foundry Flavour Wheel to taste and identify the botanicals unique to each gin before garnishing as you see fit.

• The Finish: A celebration of life with a modern day twist on the classic Tom Collins, called the Nettled Collins, which includes Psychopomp Old Tom Gin, foraged nettle syrup, lemon juice and violet bitters.

A spokesperson said: "Fake funeral processions for Madam Genever gave the crowded the streets of Victoriana London a prohibition feel, but who were we mourning?

"Sip your way through gin's fascinating story of life and death, how the country grappled its addiction to Mother’s Ruin during the British Victoriana period and how we got through to the elegance of the modern day G&T we all know and crave."

Tickets

Tickets are priced at £38.32 including booking fee and are available on Eventbrite's website.

The event takes place at Arnos Vale Cemetery on September 27. More information is available on the Facebook event page.
