Bristol burger chef who launched lockdown takeaway business crowned UK champion

A Bristol burger chef has been crowned champion in the 2021 National Burger Awards.

Danny Hawke from Danny’s Burgers in St Werburgh’s won the title of Burger Chef of the Year in the grand final in London.

In the same awards, Danny’s Burgers also scooped second best burger in the UK, narrowly missing out to a burger business in Glasgow.

Danny’s Burgers operates from the Fierce & Noble brewery in Mina Road, St Werburgh’s.

It’s a takeaway-only business that only opens on Friday (3pm-8pm) and Saturday (1pm-8pm).

The burgers are ‘high grade smash burgers’ and menu choices include cheeseburger, bacon cheeseburgers and the vegan/vegetarian ‘Beyond Cheeseburger’ - all available in single or double sizes.

The meat comes from aged beef and the burgers include American cheese, dill pickles, house sauce, fresh onion and steamed seeded buns.

Danny’s Burgers was launched during the pandemic as a sideline to Danny’s BBQ equipment business Bristol Drum Smokers.

Danny said: “Having started making burgers as a hobby off the back of my BBQ business at the beginning of first lockdown, it’s so humbling to have been awarded burger chef of the year and second best burger in the UK after less than two years in business.

“Being up against so many renowned businesses was really inspiring and I couldn’t be more proud of myself and my team who work so hard.

“This is really exciting and I will continue making burgers people will love and which will hopefully live up to the name.”

The National Burger Awards 2021 Grand Final was hosted by Christian Stevenson - aka DJ BBQ - and the 15 finalists competed in three rounds that saw them cook a technical Burger, which was made with ingredients supplied by the event’s sponsors; a meat-free burger, featuring products from Meatless Farm; and their own-recipe burger that they submitted during the entry process.
