Bristol BLM statue removal sparks heated debate on GMB

The removal of a Black Lives Matter statue from Edward Colston's plinth sparked a debate on Good Morning Britain.

The sculpture of activist Jen Reid was removed by Bristol City Council shortly after 5am this morning (Thursday, July 16) just 24 hours after it was first installed.

GMB presenters Charlotte Hawkins and Adil Ray both shared their thoughts on whether the statue being removed was the right course of action during a segment on the ITV breakfast show, Daily Star reports.

"I think on balance it was the right thing in the end," Adil said. "The statement has been made by Black Lives Matter and it was a great moment.

"We saw this black power statue and I think that was brilliant, and she looked fantastic. It was a great statue. Very powerful.

"But when it went up I just thought, 'Oh God, this could create bigger problems if it stays up there'.

Charlotte then interjected to say: "But it marked a moment. It was so striking. It resonated around the world."

Adil agreed but went on to say: "It's not to going to be black people. It's not going to be Jen Reid making a difference.

"It's going to be white people making the difference. The white people of Bristol they're going to have to have a vote now.

"What would be the most beautiful thing is if the white people of Bristol voted for that statue.

Charlotte added: "I'd vote for it!"

"That's where you're going to see real societal shifts and change. Because I think a lot of black people are fed up with going, 'well why do we have to keep on doing this? We're tired of doing this'," Adil continued.

"And I think what Jen and Marc did was fantastic. But really to see massive change we, to see her statue up there, would be fantastic.

"But I think it's down to the people to make that decision."
