Bristol Bears winger earns Australian 7s call-up in first step to fulfilling Olympic dreams

Bristol Bears winger Luke Morahan has earned a call-up to the Australian 7s squad after of this weekend's Sydney leg of the World Series.

Three cap Wallabies international Morahan jetted out to Australia after scoring in the Bears' 34-16 demolition of Gloucester in the Gallagher Premiership on Saturday.

While most of his club mates are resting with two consecutive weekends without a game due to the Six Nations and semi-finals of the Premiership Rugby Cup, Morahan has been put through his paces down under after taking the first steps to trying to earn a place at the Olympic Games this summer which take place from July 24 to August 9 in Japan.

And the Bristol flyer has done enough in training this week to convince Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens head coach Tim Walsh to call him up for the country's most important tournament of the season.

Walsh said: “Luke [Morahan] arrived and instantly showed his professionalism, class and eagerness to represent the Australian Sevens team and put his case forward for further selections.

“Bringing him into the 13 allows him to work with the group under game conditions.

“Japan, Scotland and USA [who are in Australia's group] have three varying styles of rugby and we’re looking forward to that challenge come Saturday.”

The tournament will be broadcast in the UK on Sky Sports Arena with coverage of day one from 11.15pm on Friday, through out the night.
