Bristol Bears players ratings from famous win over Saracens: Lots of eights in historic triumph

Bristol Bears pulled off the win of the season with a dramatic comeback victory over defending champions.

Ian Madigan won the match, 23-21, with the final kick of the game.

Saracens scored three tries, touching down through Tom Whitley, Marcelo Bosch and Ralph Adams-Hale, while Bristol responded with scores for Steven Luatua and Dan Thomas and fly half Callum Sheedy kicked 10 points.

Full back Alex Goode kicked all three conversions for the visitors but it was not enough.

Bristol Live chief sports reporter John Evely takes as closer look at the individual performances:

15. Mat Protheroe - 8

The young full back made his first Premiership start and made quiet the impact, breaking a tackle to set-up the Bears’ opening try.

14. Tom Pincus - 8

The winger is some way down the pecking order on the wing at the club but you would never have known it. He was great under the high ball.

13. Piers O’Conor - 7

Against a famously physical Saracens midfield he held his own and still managed to step his way through a few holes.

12. Sam Bedlow - 8

The centre was handed his full Premiership debut had a cracking game, putting in some big tackles in defence and getting over the game line. He was supposed to be the weak link but was arguably the best back on the field.

11. Alapati Leiua - 7

The big winger did everything right without doing anything too flashy. He played a pivotal part in Lautua’s try, giving the scoring pass.

10. Callum Sheedy (co-capt) - 7

The fly-half kicked 10 points to keep the scoreboard ticking to allow his replacement Madigan to kick the winning points. He showed good leadership.

9. Andy Uren - 7

The scrum half had a mixed game, struggling to get quick ball in the first half but he led the side with his box kicking.

1. Jake Woolmore - 8

The Bristol scrum was dominant against Saracens, with is some going and he worked hard in defence.

2. Harry Thacker - 9

The hooker was everywhere once again. It’s baffling how he continues to get over the game line when it looks like he has so little run to work with. The line out was superb.

3. John Afoa - 9

The prop rolled back the years with a stunning performance, not on in the set piece where he was dominant, but in open play, constantly offering himself as a runner and breaking the line for Dan Thomas’ try.

4. Ed Holmes - 7

The second row is perhaps one of the most underrated figures in this Bristol squad. His athleticism allows him to put in a tremendous amount of work while doing all the bread and butter stuff well.

5. Chris Vui - 7

The Samoan is a mighty presence in the Bristol pack, he really helped the Bears match Saracens physically and won some notably turnovers.

6. Steve Luatua (co-capt) - 8

The All Black was a giant figure in the Bristol team in both defence and attack, making hard yards and more importantly right decisions at key times. He was named man of the match.

7. Dan Thomas - 8

A try, vital turnovers and another all action defence against a pack full of international players. He is really coming into his own.

8. Nick Haining - 7

He battled hard in a match which was tough for the big forwards with a lot of running required with the kicking game employed.
