Bristol Bears out to conquer Europe this season says Pat Lam

Pat Lam is already plotting Bristol Bears' route to the European Challenge Cup final and glory in Marseille on May 22.

The Bristol Bears director of rugby said without a split second's hesitation his target is for the club to win the second tier European competition this season having been knocked out to eventual beaten finalists La Rochelle in the quarter-final stages last season.

French side ASM Clermont Auvergne were crowned Champions last season after beating La Rochelle 36-16 in the final at St James Park in Newcastle.

Lam's side kick-off their European Challenge Cup campaign in Pool 4 at home to Zebre in November.

And the Bears have a great chance of advancing to the knock out stages this season as they have once again been drawn against Italian minnows Zebre from the Pro14, and newly promoted French Top 14 side in Brive and Stade Francais who finished eighth in the Top 14 last season.

With back-to-back Gallagher Premiership and European Challenge Cup weekends in 2019/20 due to the late start to the domestic season to try and limit clashes with the Rugby World Cup, Lam could be forgiven for using the competition to rest players.

But asked how he plans to approach Europe this season, Lam said: "We are going to win it. Yeah it is no different, we wanted to win it last year, and to do that Ashton Gate is an unbelievable place for us and they will support us to do that.

"To do that we need to earn a home quarter-final, and a home semi-final and then the final will be in Marseille. So if we can get a home quarter, and home semi, you have got to do well in your pool.

"That is not a given as you know, Zebre beat us last year [20-17 in Italy], Brive have a strong history in Europe and Stade Francais have a pretty world class squad.

"It is going to be tough but that is the way I see it."
