Bristol Bears' longest serving player departs

Bristol's longest serving player Jack Tovey will leave the club this summer after 10 years at the club.

Tovey, 28 will make the switch to ambitious Greene King IPA side Ealing Trailfinders.

The utility back has made more than 190 appearances since making his debut in November 2009 as an 18 year-old and, since then, has helped the Bristol Bears to two promotions and a B&I Cup title.

Thatchers Gold Series Episode 4: 'Twickenham experience can help us become a Champions Cup team', says Bristol Bears head coach Pat Lam

Head coach Pat Lam said: “Everybody at the Bears is grateful to Jack for the commitment and effort he has shown to the club on and off the field.

“It’s never an easy decision to leave your hometown club, but Jack will benefit from a fresh challenge and he’ll relish the opportunity for regular gametime.

“We would like to thank Jack for what he has achieved in the Bristol jersey and we wish him, his wife Harriet and his family the very best for the next chapter in West London.”

The Bristolian, who grew up in Staple Hill is currently Bristol’s longest serving player, having joined the club.

Before that he started his rugby journey at Cleeve RFC and Colstons, the most successful school at producing professional rugby players in the city.

However Tovey has featured just once for the Bears first team this season, coming off the bench against Enisei in the European Challenge Cup group stages, and has been out on loan at Championship side Hartpury in recent weeks.

On Saturday he helped them a famous 28-26 victory over Bedford Blues on Saturday to lift the Gloucestershire side out of the relegation zone.

Tovey joins Nick Haining, who is heading to Pro14 side Edinburgh, as players confirmed as departing Bristol at the end of the season.
