Bristol Banksy artwork has 'brought Vale Street closer together'

A resident of Vale Street in Totterdown who woke up to a Banksy artwork yesterday (December 10) said it has "brought the street closer together".

Fern Scott, 39, lives opposite the mural, which depicts an old woman sneezing and her dentures flying out.

Ms Scott moved to England's steepest street just a month ago, during lockdown, and said the Banksy was a "lovely surprise".

She said: "We only noticed it because the postman knocked on the door.

"It was really nice because we also met our neighbours for the first time.

"We hadn't had a chance to meet everyone because of lockdown, so I think it's brought the street closer together."

Further up Vale Street, residents were also enjoying the new attraction.

Charlie Low, 25, said: "All the hype is very entertaining.

"We can see it from our living room window.

"We're definitely intrigued to see how big the crowds get at the weekend."

Ms Low has been working from home and swiftly became aware of the artwork yesterday morning (December 10), when she saw a crowd gathering at the bottom of the street.

After reports of people climbing the roof of the house on which the mural was painted, the owners have installed an alarm system to deter hoodlums.

Speaking about the new security measures, Ms Low said: "It's a funny one isn't it?

"Not many other street artists would have the same things put in place.

"It's only Banksy, because he's so famous.

"Why should it be treated any differently? But it brings a lot of people joy as well of course."

Today (December 11), crowds continue to gather around the artwork and show no signs of drifting away any time soon.
