Bristol Balloon Fiesta 2019: Why balloons have to fly at dawn and dusk

Organisers of Bristol International Balloon Fiesta have explained why balloons were not flying this morning (August 9) despite the sunny weather.

Today got off to a surprisingly pleasant start despite a Met Office weather warning for rain being in place for all of the day.

But both of the mass ascents scheduled were cancelled due to the dismal conditions being forecast.

A balloon fiesta spokesperson said yesterday: "Due to the challenging weather conditions ahead we are taking the advance decision to cancel the mass ascents scheduled tomorrow for 6am and 6pm."

Despite the weather looking bright this morning, the mass ascent remained cancelled.

A spokeswoman confirmed to Bristol Live today: “Unfortunately despite the appearance of fine weather this morning we are currently experiencing high winds which are not suitable for ballooning.

"The forecast, although relatively dry, suggests that the winds will get stronger as the day progresses which is why we have taken the advance decision to cancel this evening's mass ascent.

"The Fiesta is open to visitors and we still have plenty of entertainment throughout the day, including our fiesta bandstand, the Aerospace Bristol Concorde exhibition, Eat Naturals Makery on the Move and an assault course for the little ones.

"We also have Fab’s amazing lolly maze, ball pits and slides and the BBC Radio Bristol marquee featuring their Upload Stage, our family trail and your chance to be a weather presenter."

Why don't the balloons fly at other times of day?

The spokeswoman said the balloons were unable to fly at a later time in the morning because wind conditions are best at dawn.

"Ballooning in the UK is at dawn and dusk, as this is when the wind conditions and air temperatures are most stable," she said.

She added 'high winds' were forecast today despite the lack of rain.
