Bristol Balloon Fiesta 2019 site closed due to bad weather

The Bristol Balloon Fiesta site has been temporarily closed today (August 10) due to 'very strong gusts'.

Organisers have decided to close the site at Ashton Court to ensure the safety of visitors and balloon crews.

Both of today's mass ascents were cancelled yesterday (August 9) due to potential risks from heavy wind and strong winds.

The fiesta will now be completely closed for the afternoon and organisers will decide whether to reopen for the evening later today.

A spokesperson for the balloon fiesta said: “Unfortunately the high winds we are currently experiencing include very strong gusts.

UPDATE:

"Therefore the organising committee have taken the decision to temporarily close the site as the safety of our visitors, balloon crews and the event team is our priority.

“We hope this will be for this afternoon only and we will review the situation late afternoon. We hope to be in a position to reopen the site in time for this evening’s Nightglow.

“We are sorry for the disappointment this may cause and we appreciate your understanding at this challenging time.

“The weather conditions are improving tonight and for tomorrow and we look forward to making the most of the better weather.”

What's the weather forecast for Sunday?

Thankfully things are looking a little more positive tomorrow morning (Sunday, August 11) with only a 15 per cent chance of rain and wind speeds of only 13 miles per hour.

This means we could see the second mass ascent of the festival unless things take a turn for the worse.

There is a higher chance of rain in the afternoon and evening, though, which could put the second ascent in jeopardy.
