Bristol Balloon Fiesta 2019: Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill praises giant Darth Vader balloon

A certain Star Wars themed balloon from the opening day of the Bristol Balloon Fiesta caught the attention of Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill himself.

On Thursday morning, a mass ascent kicked off the fiesta in spectacular style, with nearly 60 balloons, including special shapes, set off from Ashton Court  floating beautifully over Bristol.

The incredible Darth Vader balloon was one of the many highlights and thousands of Star Wars fans were treated to a glimpse of the iconic villain flying high above  Clifton Suspension Bridge.

As the wind took the balloon above Bristol Harbourside, many shared photos and videos of the spectacular sight on social media.

Soon enough, Star Wars legend Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker in the films, commented on the balloon and said it 'raised his spirits' during a 'horrible' week.

He posted on Twitter: "After a horrible, no good, terrible week, there's nothing quite like a giant floating #DarthVader balloon to distract from reality & raise your spirits. #ThanksDad."

However, a weather warning for rain in place today (August 9) means the mass ascents for Friday have unfortunately been cancelled.

A balloon fiesta spokesman said yesterday (August 8): "Due to the challenging weather conditions ahead we are taking the advance decision to cancel the mass ascents scheduled tomorrow for 6am and 6pm.

"Weather conditions are improving as the weekend progresses so we remain hopeful and will update everyone with more news tomorrow when we can make an accurate assessment."
