Bristol Asda 'coronavirus outbreak': Reports around 40 workers have symptoms

Asda has responded to claims around 40 employees at its Avonmouth distribution centre have coronavirus symptoms.

An employee at the supermarket chain's chilled depot on Kings Weston Lane told Bristol Live about 40 of her colleagues are self-isolating.

She said: "Other staff are not being told to isolate and the centre remains open, so it just keeps spreading and they just keep getting new staff in to replace those off sick."

Asda declined to confirm how many workers at the site have tested positive or have Covid-19 symptoms.

Its spokesman said the company would ask anyone with symptoms to immediately self-isolate and get a test.

If the test was positive, the Test and Trace system would be used to identify close contacts, who would then themselves have to self-isolate and get a test.

The spokesman said if colleagues are not told to isolate, it is because they are not considered a close contact by the Government's Test and Trace system.

He added: “We have stringent measures in place to ensure our colleagues in our Avonmouth depot can all abide by the governments social distancing policies and all of our colleagues are provided with a face covering to wear whilst working.

"We would never speak about individual circumstances. However, we continue to follow government guidance by asking any colleagues with coronavirus symptoms to immediately self-isolate and are supporting them by providing full pay during the isolation period.”

The depot has a thermal imaging camera which checks the temperature of everyone coming on site, as well as tannoy reminders and signage urging social distancing and mask-wearing.
