Bristol arts venue raises money for local creatives and artists through coffee sales

A multi-purpose Bristol arts venue is raising money for local creatives through the coffee it serves in its city centre coffee bar. Dareshack opened on Wine Street in October 2020 and has since expanded into an adjacent building with a huge 4,000 sq ft new space for gigs and creative events.

And now its owner and staff are on a mission to ‘unleash creative opportunities’ through the specialty coffee it serves. This ‘one cup at a time’ creative revolution has already raised funds for local projects.

Since it opened in a former branch of Starbucks, Dareshack has become one of Bristol’s most interesting new hubs for local creatives, musicians and artists. The 140-capacity studio space launched with gigs and performances from a range of local and national acts, as well as hosting photoshoots, filming and workshops.

Founder Adda Cohn says: “More than just a drink, specialty coffee for Dareshack is where creativity starts – a conversation, an inspiration, an idea. With the mission of unleashing creative opportunities and collaborating with the local creative community, we have launched a platform that takes a percentage of coffee sales - and everything that goes through the tills - to turn it into creative opportunities.

“Through the simple act of drinking exceptional coffee, people contribute to unleashing the enigmatic power that can push the community forward. They are challenging the status quo and creating meaningful experiences, originating new projects, new stories and experiences. It is basically creativity fuelled by caffeine.”

The platform is now live and is funding a project from the visual artist Matteo Amadio: Unknown Connections – a multimedia and interactive installation at the intersection of sound and light. Creating an immersive environment inspired by the theory of Loop Quantum Gravity, audiences can imaginatively explore the interactions between its parts and how elements evolve.

Creatives can apply via the Dareshack website here. Dareshack is located on Wine Street and also at the Glitch Studio in Old Market Street.
