Bristol area records hundreds more coronavirus cases as surge testing rolls out

Bristol has recorded another triple-figure jump in coronavirus cases in just 24 hours.

Official figures published by the government today (Sunday, February 7) show 109 further cases in the city itself, which is down slightly on 133 recorded yesterday.

It comes as a two-week targeted programme of "surge testing" rolls out in the area, in response to mutated cases of the Kent variant identified earlier this week.

Across all four local authorities in the wider Bristol region, there were 248 new cases of COVID-19, down from 282 yesterday.

Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire each recorded one more death, while Bath and North East Somerset did not record any.

  • Bristol: +109 (27,832)

  • North Somerset: +48 (9,179)

Across the UK today, a further 15,845 cases were confirmed, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to 3,945,680.

This is far fewer than the figure of 828 recorded yesterday, but Sunday figures are often lower due to the weekend lag in data being processed.

As of yesterday (February 6), 12,014,288 people across the UK have received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 511,447 have had both doses.
