Bristol area records 453 positive Covid tests as the number of cases continues to fall

The number of new coronavirus cases recorded in the Bristol area today is less than half the number found two weeks ago, according to official figures.

A total of 453 cases of the virus were recorded across the Bristol area today (August 2), which is considerably lower than the 1,063 cases found on July 19.

The huge drop in confirmed cases follows a similar trend across the country, with case numbers falling around the UK.

While the drop in case numbers seems good, some experts have warned that the drop in confirmed cases could be caused by people deciding not to take coronavirus tests to avoid having to self-isolate.

Of the new cases recorded today, 206 of them were discovered in Bristol, bringing the city's total number of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic to 46,858.

Meanwhile, 101 cases were recorded in South Gloucestershire and another 78 were found in Bath and North East Somerset.

A further 68 cases were discovered in North Somerset.

The update means that there have now been 98,030 confirmed cases of the virus in the Bristol area since the start of the pandemic.

As of 9am on Monday, there had been a further 21,952 lab-confirmed Covid-19 cases in the UK, the Government said.

A further 24 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Sunday, bringing the UK total to 129,743.

Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been 154,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

How many people have been vaccinated?

Government data up to August 1 shows that of the 85,336,436 Covid jabs given in the UK, 46,872,411 were first doses, a rise of 21,266 on the previous day.

Some 38,464,025 were second doses, an increase of 118,184.
