Bristol area Covid deaths and infections as surge testing for new Brazil variant begins

Two more people with coronavirus have died across the Bristol region, the latest figures show.

New Department of Health data reveals one more Covid patient has died in Bristol, and another person in South Gloucestershire.

Surge testing got underway today (Monday, March 1) in the north of Bristol to try to discover if the new 'Brazil variant' of the Covid-19 has spread in the area. Two cases were confirmed in South Gloucestershire over the weekend.

It is understood both people have been self-isolating since their return from Brazil, and the council says risk to the public remains low.

Data released today also shows infection rates continue to drop across the area, while Bristol confirmed another 41 cases on Monday.

New daily cases last dipped below 50 for a brief period at the beginning of December, and previously in September.
