Bristol and surrounding areas among most dangerous places in UK for cyclists

Cyclists in Bristol and surrounding areas are among the most at risk in the UK of being injured by a car, police data has shown.

Last year, Avon and Somerset Constabulary were called out to 478 incidents where cyclists had been injured by cars while on the road.

This figure is higher than most other regions in the country. In fact, it was topped only by the county of Hampshire, which was the most dangerous.

Across the country, 2018 saw police attend over 6,611 incidents where cyclists had been injured after being hit by vehicles.

For cities covered by Avon and Somerset police, there were almost 100 more incidents than in 2017.

The data was uncovered via Freedom of Information requests sent by cycling injury specialists Claims to police forces across the UK.

National groups such as cycling charity Cycling UK are now urging the Government to tackle what they call the “active travel crisis”.

Cycling UK’s chief executive Paul Tuohy said in a letter: “Investment in cycling could make a huge and remarkably cost-effective contribution to tackling several of the economic, health and environmental challenges now facing our country.

"The aim must surely be to ensure that the forthcoming Spending Review delivers a renewed Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy that genuinely transforms our roads, streets and communities into clean, safe and attractive places to live or move around on foot or by cycle."
