Bristol among worst cities in UK for speeding

Bristol drivers are among the worst in the country for speeding, new research has revealed.

The city has been named the fourth worst in the UK - behind Edinburgh, London and Glasgow - when it comes to sticking to the speed limit.

Despite the threat of fines, licence points and risk to safety, a massive 73 per cent of people in Bristol have admitted to “knowingly speeding”, according to the report by car service provider Fixter.

But why are Bristol drivers breaking the law?

Some 28 per cent of people broke the speed limit because they thought it was safe to do so; 15 per cent needed to shorten their journey; 12 per cent were running late; nine per cent did it during an emergency; and six per cent said they did when they knew there were no speed cameras.

A further three per cent admitted it was just because they enjoy driving fast.

Limvirak Chea, chief executive of Fixter, said: “There are a significant number of motorists who knowingly speed."

However, almost half of Bristol drivers (44 per cent) said a new Google Maps update that will notify drivers when they are speeding would make them more cautious.

But a quarter admitted it wouldn't stop them driving fast.

Limvirak added: “We can see that many drivers are optimistic that receiving notifications about changes in the speed limit will make them more cautious when driving and less likely to speed.

“Any improvements we see in the number of speeding offences will have a positive impact on road safety in the UK and, if this update helps achieve this effect, it will be a huge success.”

Meanwhile, Edinburgh was named the worst city in the country for speeding, with a whopping 81 per cent of drivers admitting to breaking the law.
