Bristol among least-polluting cities in UK - but it's still 'poor' for walking and cycling to work

Bristol has been named among the least-polluting cities in Britain.

The city was ranked 10th in the UK, with 3.5kt of carbon emissions per person, according to the UK Powerhouse report by Irwin Mitchell and the Centre for Economic & Business Research (Cebr).

By comparison, Bournemouth was named the least-polluting city of all, followed by Ipswich and Southampton.

The report also looked at cities that were best for waste recycling and Bristol was ranked sixth, at 47 per cent.

However, Bristol did not fare so well when it came to environmentally friendly commuting.

The report examined the share of people commuting using either low or zero-emission transportation - cycling or walking - to get to work

Bristol ranked 27th on the list for zero-emission commuters, with just six per cent of the population travelling on foot or by bike.

Meanwhile London, surprisingly, ranked first, with 21 per cent of the population of the inner capital using zero-emission transport.

The report also looked at the areas with the highest number of solar panel installations. Again, Bristol appeared in 27th place with just two per cent of households with a renewable electricity installation.

Vicky Brackett, chief executive of Irwin Mitchell’s Business Legal Services division, said: "The ever-more urgent topic of climate change and sustainability has reached the highest level of government.

“In the case of Bristol, it performs well in some indicators of environmental sustainability but poorly in others. If it can continue to improve Bristol clearly has the potential to become be one of the most sustainable cities in the UK.”

The news comes a week after Extinction Rebellion protesters took to the streets in Bristol over the world's climate crisis.
