Bristol Airport: Video captures planes struggling to land as Storm Barra batters region

The difficult landings at Bristol Airport during Storm Barra have been captured on video.

Storm Barra is expected to bring heavy rain and gusts of up to 80mph to parts of the UK today (Wednesday, December 8) as a weather warning is in place for parts of the South West and Wales as the storm rages for a second day.

Yesterday, the Atlantic storm barrelled in across the Republic of Ireland before sparking a number of severe weather warnings across the UK. These included snow alerts across northern England and Scotland and wind alerts across most of the UK.

And a second weather warning for wind is in place today - with this one exclusively covering parts of the South West and South Wales. You can follow our liveblog with the latest weather updates here.

One of the clips shows a Ryanair plane having to abort landing just seconds before doing so due to the very strong winds. At that point, the gusts were of 46mph.

According to the YouTube account, the plane then waited north of the airport until the storm had cleared and then requested to land on a different runway due to the change in wind direction.

The account states that the first landing attempt was just before 12.30pm yesterday, with the aircraft successfully landing at 1.01pm.

A second video shows aircrafts swaying from side to side as they prepare for landing at the airport.

Gales and blizzards have been reported across the country, with wind gusts reaching 86mph at Aberdaron in Gwynedd.

Storm Barra is expected to cause transport delays while some short term loss of power and other services is also possible.
