Bristol Airport responds to lockdown roadmap as holiday-goers start booking

Bristol Airport has issued a statement after Boris Johnson unveiled his roadmap out of lockdown.

During the third lockdown, departures have been stripped back to a small number of domestic flights, with only essential travel allowed.

In his briefing yesterday (February 22), the Prime Minister said nternational travel could be allowed to resume by May 17 - subject to a review.

Today there were no flights into or out of the airport, with the 10-day quarantine for people arriving from red-list countries no doubt deterring travellers.

Now the roadmap out of lockdown has been announced, the CEO of Bristol Airport has issued a statement.

Dave Lees said: “We welcome the Government’s decision to review air travel and their commitment in developing a plan for the return of safe international air travel ahead of summer 2021.

"We will continue to work with Government on all the measures required including health certification, testing and working across international borders to provide customers with the reassurance necessary.

"These measures will build on work already commenced and will help restart flight operations when the time is right.”

During lockdown, Avon and Somerset Police officers have been stationed at the airport to check people's reasons for travelling.

As things stand, the government's lockdown rules state: "You can only travel internationally – or within the UK – where you first have a legally permitted reason to leave home. In addition, you should consider the public health advice in the country you are visiting.

"You cannot leave your home or the place where you are living for holidays or overnight stays unless you have a reasonable excuse for doing so. This means that holidays in the UK and abroad are not allowed."
